Secret Life of Women

Sharon Hinck. The Secret Life of Becky Miller. Bethany house. 2006.

This is a fun book to read. Becky Miller’s life is shared both through the reality of her day-to-day life and her dreamed of life. It may well represent the two separate realities woman face today.

Becky is feeling down as she tries to be the type of wife and mother she wants to me.

I was generally a positive person, but lately my goal to be a Wonderful Wife and Marvelous Mom had me frayed around the edges. I loved everyone under this roof with a passion and wanted to create a warm, nurturing world for them, but my self-esteem was chipped away a little more each day when I couldn’t live up to my ideas. [Page 8]
This situation describes many women today—trying to be a fulltime mother, a fulltime wife, and a fulltime employee for some company all at the same time.

Through a group of friends that come together on a weekly basis to pray and study the Bible, Becky slowly learns to follow God instead of her own ideals. In the meantime, she has to deal with ill children, an unemployed husband, and all the other details of daily life. In Becky’s dream world, she is a conquering hero!

Recommendation

Consider purchasing this book for that busy woman in your life. She may be your mother! Your wife! Or even the woman that shares your church pew or sits with you in Bible Study. It is sure to cheer her up and quietly remind her that following God and doing what he wants for you is the only true ideal we need to strive to meet.

Faith Alvis Taylor. A Look Within. BJU Press. 2006.

This study learns about 11 Bible women. It studies the one driving characteristic for each of the women. After reading the book reviewed above, this study would be excellent for any Christian Woman today. It shows both the strengths and weaknesses of these women.

The women you study don’t always represent desirable traits. You will learn about: Eve, Sarah (wife of Abraham), Rebekah, Leah, Rachel, Dinah, Miriam, Hannah, Michal, Esther, and Mary Magdalene. In each study, you read the woman’s story in the Scriptures, study her character, compare it with your character, and then apply it to your own life.

Recommendation

If you give the first book to someone, considering adding this one too. It may remind them that we all should strive to be like Christ and not fall into some of the traps these Biblical women did.
