The Rest of God

Mark Buchanan. The Rest of God. W Publishing Group. 2006.

What comes to your mind when you see a book titled, The Rest of God? I knew this book was on the importance of keeping the Sabbath. Therefore, I expected it to be about having to worship on Saturday instead of Sunday, and some other doctrines that I might or might not agree with. I was in for a very pleasant surprise.

This fourteen chapter book will help you restore your mind and body from the chronic business that modern life in the Western world thrusts upon us. Buchanan begins the book with a chapter on the “gift” of work given us by God. Most of us forget to count the blessings that our jobs bring to us: money for tithing, a home, a car, food, heat and electricity, water, clothing, and often, money left over to go golfing, fishing, boating, bowling, and other forms of recreation.

God also gave us the gift of the Sabbath, meant to be a day of resting from our normal routines. He knew we needed to be restored both mentally and physically. We also need time to spend listening to His voice.

God is gently using this book to show me that I have time to devote to learning more about Him and His ways instead of focusing on how to please an employer. Sometimes I feel like I have way too much time on my hands. Do I need a “Sabbath rest”? The answer is a resounding ‘Yes!” Even I need time apart from medical visits, or just taking care of my home and pets to spend seeking God’s face and hearing his voice direct my pathway.

Recommendation

This book will surely challenge you to slow down your life. Most of us are on a busy merry go-round that never seems to stop. Even our worship time must stay within a certain time limit so we can get on with our busy lives. Weekends are as busy as the work-week.

Reading through this book will assist you in changing your perspective on life’s many activities. In some important ways, it is essential for Christians to remember that work is actually a way of worshipping God. If every Christian viewed their workplace as a place of worship, many would gain opportunities to share Christ because others would observe your attitude and wonder how you could remain so calm in the midst of a crisis or just in the midst of very busy days.

Consider making this book your devotional for the next fourteen days. If you learned to put just a few of the suggestions given by the author into practice, your life would be changed for the better.
