Isaiah

Peter A. Steveson. Isaiah. BJU Press. 2003.

Isaiah may be called the most important of the prophetic books because it foretells the Salvation to be brought to the world through Christ Jesus. This book is quoted frequently in the New Testament. Stevenson leads the reader to believe that this book was actually written three different prophets named "Isaiah". However, he spends several pages in the introduction discussing all the theories about the authorship of Isaiah. I appreciated him be willing to write about all the theories so the reader can make up their own mind. Then he goes on to discuss the "theology" included in this book. The introduction ends with an outline of Isaiah.

Book Organization

There is a chapter in the commentary for each chapter in Isaiah. Stevenson introduces the chapter's contents. Then he provides an in-depth discussion of the chapter, explains the meaning of some words from their original Hebrew, and provides footnotes giving various authors' opinions on the subject matter. Each chapter ends with a section called "Practical Applications from Chapter XX".

My Recommendation

I found this book easy to read and understand. The author does an excellent job of explaining difficult points in Isaiah. This book is definitely intended for the person wanting a deeper understanding of Isaiah. It is suitable for any person desiring to study this book. This book is a commentary and would probably not be read cover to cover by any person.
