Handbook on Cults & New Religions

Ron Rhodes. Find It Quick: Handbook on Cults & New Religions. Harvest House Publishers. 2005.

Cults abound today. It is all too easy for well-meaning people to get involved in a cult rather than with true Christianity. This handbook will help you identify cults, their beliefs, and it gives apologetic power points for conversation when you encounter a member of one of the cults.

According to Rhodes, cults have several basic characteristics.

  • The leaders often claim to have a new revelation from God.
  • They deny the authority of the scripture.
  • A distorted view of who Jesus was and what he did exists in their belief system.
  • They distort the Holy Spirit by making false claims about what he is.
  • Humans are often viewed as a form of the Godhead or even as a god.
  • They deny the salvation comes by grace alone.
  • Finally, they redefine Bible terminology.
Cults have five sociological characteristics which should serve as warning signs if the group you are exploring practices them. These characteristics are extreme authoritarianism, exclusivism, isolationism, disfellowshipping for questioning their beliefs, and threats that Satan will attack you if you leave the cult.

The book provides information on 40 common cults. These include Satanism, theosophy, The Way, Zen, New Thought Movement and the Mormons.

Recommendation

Every Christian needs this book. It will help protect you from accidentally getting involved in a cult and will help you witness to those who are members. I strongly urge that all Christian church leaders be familiar with this book and have it available in their church library.
